Protect Chinatown: Boycott Alex and Jonathan Chu
The Chu family, the biggest landlords in Chinatown, have forced the beloved Jing Fong restaurant to close, and ignored offers from the community to take over the restaurant operations. Meanwhile, politicians like Mayor de Blasio speak out against anti-Asian violence, but say nothing about the economic violence of erasing 180 union jobs that supported primarily Chinese immigrants and their families.
This displacement and destruction is also anti-Asian violence.
Alex and Jonathan Chu are putting their own profit first, ripping out the heart of Chinatown, and destroying the only union restaurant jobs in the entire neighborhood. Our elected officials sit on the sidelines and do nothing to save Chinatown despite the hardship caused by the pandemic.
TAKE ACTION to save Jing Fong and protect Chinatown and the Lower East Side:
- Join the picket line! 183 Centre St in front of Eastbank on Mondays and Wednesdays from 12-2pm to demand the Chu family re-open the dining room.
- Boycott Chu’s businesses: Eastbank, 50 Bowery Hotel, Museum of Chinese in America (MOCA), Chikarashi, Nakaji.
- Share on social media: Use the hashtags #SaveJingFong and #SaveChinatown to call out the Chu family and tag @NYCMayor to demand he intervene.
Not only has the Chu family forced Jing Fong to close, they have a history of harming the community for their own good.
- Supporting the new Chinatown jail in a shady exchange for $35M in funding.
- Building the hotel at 50 Bowery, the largest and most expensive hotel in Chinatown, which displaced the unionized Silver Palace restaurant. 50 Bowery has contributing to the gentrification of Chinatown and displacement of its long-time residents.
- And now, forcing the closure of Jing Fong, removing Chinatown's last restaurant union, and further destroying this community.
To stop greedy landlords like Alex and Jonathan Chu from pillaging this community for their own profits, we need our community and our elected officials to invest in real protections for Chinatown.
This means passing the Chinatown Working Group Plan, and providing real aid to the small businesses and workers in Chinatown hurt during this pandemic.
